Development of an Adjoint for a Complex Atmospheric Model, the ARPS, using TAF∗

چکیده
Large-scale scientific computer models, such as operational weather predictions models, pose challenges on the applicability of AD tools. We report the application of TAF to the development of the adjoint model and tangent linear model of a complex atmospheric model, ARPS. Strategies to overcome the problems encountered during the development process are discussed. A rigorous verification procedure of the adjoint model is presented. Simple experiments are carried out for sensitivity study, and the results confirm the correctness of the generated models.

An Example of an Automatic Differentiation-Based Modelling System
We present a prototype of a Carbon Cycle Data Assimilation System (CCDAS), which is composed of a terrestrial biosphere model (BETHY) coupled to an atmospheric transport model (TM2), corresponding derivative codes and a derivative-based optimisation routine. In calibration mode, we use first and second derivatives to estimate model parameters and their uncertainties from atmospheric observation...
متن کاملGenerating efficient derivative code with TAF: Adjoint and tangent linear Euler flow around an airfoil
FastOpt’s new automatic differentiation tool TAF is applied to the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes solver NSC2KE. For a configuration that simulates the Euler flow around a NACA airfoil, TAF has generated the tangent linear and adjoint models as well as the second derivative (Hessian) code. Owing to TAF’s capability of generating efficient adjoints of iterative solvers, the derivative code has a ...
متن کاملCoupled fire–atmosphere modeling of wildland fire spread using DEVS-FIRE and ARPS
This article introduces a new wildland fire spread prediction system consisting of the raster-based Discrete Event System Specification Fire model (DEVS-FIRE) and the Advanced Regional Prediction System atmospheric model (ARPS). Fire–atmosphere feedbacks are represented by transferring heat from DEVS-FIRE to ARPS as an externally forced set of surface fluxes and mapping the resulting changes in...

A mathematical model is presented in the present study to control the light propagation in an inhomogeneous media. The method is based on the identification of the optimal materials distribution in the media such that the trajectories of light rays follow the desired path. The problem is formulated as a distributed parameter identification problem and it is solved by a numerical met...
